H7 led bulb buying guide
If you drive regularly at night, you should not neglect your car's daytime running lights. It is important that you prioritize their power and the quality of their brightness. Otherwise, it will be difficult to distinguish what is on the road.
Halogen bulbs are still a priority on new cars as well as used ones. But the high performance LED bulbs are also starting to settle into the headlights and fog lights of today's vehicles.
But, if you want to convert your halogen headlight bulbs to LED versions, that's a good thing. It is known that an LED projector has a lower energy consumption compared to another halogen.
In this comparison, you have a wide choice of H7 LED bulbs. And this buying guide is provided to make it easier for you to choose a pair for your car.
About the H7 LED bulb
The headlights of the cars of recent years are now fitted with an H7 base, especially on the low beam. Sometimes you have a xenon kit which produces warm white compared to an H7 halogen bulb. The H7 LED bulb can therefore be used as a replacement for the latter. And as a headlight bulb (high beam), it is also present on some vehicle models.
Thanks to its light intensity, the H7 LED bulb is able to reproduce the light output of a xenon bulb. But, that depends on the amount of lumens it produces. And the higher the lumens, the better your visibility at night.
What is the color temperature of an H7 LED bulb?
LED technology is especially popular for its low energy consumption. In terms of Watts, an H7 LED bulb is much less greedy than another halogen. However, it is often criticized that the color temperature of LED bulbs makes them a poor choice for automotive lighting. However, this is not the case at all.
The LED bulb, whether for interior lighting, parking or sidelights, turn signals, license plate or tail lights, is perfectly capable of producing white light identical to that of a bulb halogen. Indeed, you can find different color temperatures on H7 LED bulbs.
- Warm color
- Bright color
- Super shiny color
The warm color has a temperature between 2700 and 3500 Kelvin. However, although this warmer color is generally described as being better on the eye, it does not impart good color to the headlights. It also doesn't have the brightness to illuminate long distances.
The bright color has a temperature between 3500 and 5000 Kelvin. It is neither hot nor tiring on the eyes. They can be found on different models of headlights. Here you have cold white which is enough to see further and have a wider view.
The super shiny colour has a temperature above 5000 Kelvin.. You have pure white here which will allow you to see the farthest and have a wider view on the road. On the other hand, it can tire the eyes of motorists who pass you.
What is the lumen on an H7 LED bulb?
The total amount of visible light produced by a source is measured in lumens. While color will make a beam of light more or less visible, the intensity of light will always be measured in lumens.
Most headlight models use a light intensity of 6000, 6500, 8000 or 10,000 lumens. But, in general, you can relate it to the color temperature. Warm colored H7 LED lamps will normally have between 6000 to 6500 lumens. Brightly colored, white illuminated H7 LED headlight bulbs will have around 8,000 lumens. And H7 LED bulbs similar to xenon ballast headlights will have around 10,000 lumens. Philips and Osram stood out on these types of very bright LED car bulbs.
How do I choose an H7 LED light bulb?
By choosing the wrong H7 diode bulb, you may not have a sufficiently powerful lighting system. Thus, it is more prudent to fully understand the features to consider before choosing a high power H7 LED bulb.
Already, check the voltage that is available on your vehicle and which is expressed in Volts. In general, small cars are 12V while SUVs and utility vehicles are 24V. If you want to do it yourself, you just need to connect a multimeter to the cigarette lighter socket. Then control the power output of your car headlights. Compacts, sedans and minivans produce 55W, and large vehicles produce up to 100W.
Once you know the operating voltage and powerIf you want, you can choose the type of LED.
- SMD LED
- LED COB
SMD H7 LED bulbs are very affordable. They are equipped with an SMD chip on which the light emitting diode is based. The downside of this LED technology is the low light intensity.
COB H7 LED bulbs are the most common on the market. They are capable of producing pure white and have a higher colour temperature than the filament of H7 halogen bulbs. However, their operation produces heat, which requires a fan to cool them down.
